A Letter from our Founder/Formulator/CEO Brenda Brock
“It is not just one action taken or one ingredient added to a product that makes a brand or product sustainable”
In the summer of 1999, when I first sold my 100% natural herbal skincare products at an organic farmstand in rural Rhode Island, there were no categories for luxury beauty products like green, clean, or organic. So, my preparations were simply what I was taught and had always known to be efficacious and environmentally thoughtful- and that was traditional American herbal formulation for sustaining skin health using organically grown herbs and flowers sourced from the farm.
I started Farmaesthetics as an ode to my Grandmother and the hardworking women of our family’s farm in Texas. I grew up in their kitchen culture, absorbing traditional skill sets and knowledge of growing plants for food and other health necessities like skin health. They talked about the time of year, time of life, living in sync with the seasons and cycles of nature, and how important that is to nourishing and sustaining health over time.
The rural mindset is one of common sense, rooted in the understanding that what we put on our skin goes down the drain, goes out into the ecosystem and into the water table, that either feeds or poisons the plants and animals that we rely on. In farming communities there is a saying- “The Farmer takes care of the Farm and the Farm will take care of the Farmer.” That cycle of interdependency is at the heart of rural culture and at the heart of every decision we make at Farmaesthetics. Sustainability is an ever-evolving system for daily decision making.
Ingredients are chosen in support of organic farming, sustainable agriculture and locations to minimize distance traveled. We use glass packaging in our ongoing efforts to reuse, repurpose, reimagine and to aid in product preservation (vs using synthetic, chemical preservative systems). In our physical spaces, we always refurbish and restore what already exists. We use minimal to zero secondary packaging, we reuse boxes whenever possible, and biodegradable cornstarch packing materials that easily dissolve in water. All of these choices are in keeping with our commitment to conservation and protecting natural resources.
Sustainability is the implementation of choices that are made toward green, clean, nontoxic, natural, organic, socially just — all of it, every day.
Free of Synthetic & Artificial Ingredients– What is not in a product is just as important as what is. Whole ingredients found in nature work to reestablish natural balance in the body, the condition we know as health.
Ethically Sourced & Harvested– Shortening the distance between when and where the ingredient is sourced to when the constituents are used. Our products are made with the highest quality natural and organic ingredients, sourced from trusted US farms and the markets they supply. Our suppliers are diverse, specialized, and meet our rigorous standards for excellence. We are proud of the decades-long relationships we have established with our supply partners who share our values for ethical oversight in all aspects of the supply chain.
Made in Small Batches in the USA– To ensure our products arrive at their peak of efficacy, Farmaesthetics are made in small batches. Herbs, flowers and raw materials are ordered in smaller volumes to ensure they are used and preserved at their freshest and most potent. By minimizing the distance and time it takes between harvest and shipment to our facility, we ensure the products we make, make it to you at their eco-luscious best.
Cruelty Free– Our products are never tested on animals at either the finished product or ingredient level and our formulations are not subject to any form of cruelty to animals, human injustice or environmental misconduct. All of our ingredients and finished goods are sourced with a deference to the highest ethical standards and with complete transparency.
