Our New Favorite Method for Achieving the Ultimate At-Home Facial
Do it like the pros! Instead of treating the skin for one issue or as a “type”, we love multi-masking to target different areas of the skin all in one go.
What is multi-masking?
In order to address multiple skincare concerns all at once, we recommend using different treatment masks on different areas of the skin to create the ultimate at-home facial. Since each area of the face has different needs that can require individual attention, one mask may not target every issue. Solution: use different treatments to target multiple areas simultaneously. For example to treat a breakout, oily zone, or enlarged pores, try using a more clarifying clay mask on those areas only, while applying a thorough exfoliation mask or a super-hydrating mask to dry, parched areas of the skin. This guide will help you navigate your unique skincare needs to create the ultimate at-home, multi-masking treatment.
Where to Begin:
We recommend starting this process by first assessing your skin. With a good mirror, really inspect each area of your face. Do you have dry patches? Dark spots? Breakouts? Fine lines? Oily T-zones? Enlarged pores? It’s important to identify your specific skincare concerns in order to figure out which mask goes where.
Start with a clean base! Cleansing the face will open pores and soften the skin, prepping it for treatment. Try using a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of needed natural oils. We like to lather 1-2 pumps of our Fine Herbal Cleanser into wet hands then gently massage into skin with circular motion. Thoroughly remove cleanser with warm water (not too hot) and gently pat dry. Let the masking begin!
How to Target Your Unique Skincare Concerns and Desired Benefits:
Oily: For oilier areas and enlarged pores, we recommend our Rosehip & Clay Mint Mask. Mix 1 tablespoon with cool water or our Pure Complexion Tonic for added astringent benefits. Mix to create a thin paste, then apply to the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks or use on breakouts as a spot treatment to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing.
Dry: For dry areas it’s just as important to reach for an exfoliant as it is to reach for a super-hydrating mask. We recommend using one of our Sweet Milk Facial Exfoliates, made with lactic acid in its whole organic milk form, to dissolve dead skin cells. Mix 1-2 spoonfuls of any one of our Sweet Milk Facial Exfoliates (Lavender Buds are great for dry skin) with our Fine Herbal Cleanser to create a creamy paste. Apply to areas that are prone to dryness. (For many people this is the forehead, chin, or area around the perimeter of the face). Our Herbal Hydration Complex also contains lactic acid to gently slough away dead skin cells, while cooling the skin, reducing redness and inflammation and infusing tissue with a veil of hydration.
Discoloration: For dark spots or discoloration, our Sweet Milk and Orange Peel Facial Exfoliate is packed with natural Vitamin C to help even skin tone. Mix 1-2 spoonfuls of Sweet Milk Facial Exfoliate with Fine Herbal Cleanser to create a creamy paste. Apply to the areas in need of a Vitamin C boost to help even skin tone and brighten the whole complexion.
Fine Lines: For fine lines, our Vassar Rose Perfecting Polish is our safe, natural alternative to microdermabrasion. Mix 1-2 tablespoons with 2-4 pumps of Fine Herbal Cleanser or water and apply to the forehead, around the mouth, or anywhere there are fine lines. Apply to clean, damp skin with light circular motions to exfoliate while stimulating blood flow. Visible results are achieved without stripping or depleting tissue, which can commonly occur with synthetic or chemical peels, or other “anti-aging” devices. This mask will tone, tighten and brighten the skin for a vibrant, polished glow.
Layering: Applying a mask over a mask is also a strategy we love to incorporate into our skincare regimen. Herbal Hydration Complex Remedy Reserve Mask is so gentle and hydrating that it can be applied over other masks to help calm the overall complexion
*Pro Tip: Apply any of the desired masks all the way to your neck, décolleté and upper chest area for a total body glow!
Final Steps:
As a final step, don’t forget to properly moisturize your skin post-masking. This way, skin can be nourished and on its way to benefitting from the mask treatments. For normal to oily skin, we recommend our Nutrient Dense Fine Facial Oil. For super dry skin, use Complexion Conserve, our organic facial serum, applied at bedtime for its reparative moisture. Both can be layered with a finish of Nourishing Lavender Milk or Nourishing Herbal Cream to further protect skin from moisture loss.
